Each week we are publishing a prayer for the election. Please use this in your personal devotions, in prayer meetings, or in your Sunday services.
Sovereign God, king of the nations,
as we remember the coming of your Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost,
we bring before you the general election next Thursday.
We pray for our leaders and our potential leaders, especially that you would give:
peace of mind to all candidates as we approach the result,
strength to their supporters in the final week of campaigning,
endurance to those who will administer the election itself,
discernment to all voters as we make our choice,
wisdom and humility to those you will give power and authority.
Heavenly Father, love is the first fruit of your Holy Spirit.
We pray for the difficult and costly love that reaches across our differences
to those of other backgrounds,
and to those of other political views.
We ask you for debates that are marked by care for one another,
and for elected leaders who lead the way in love, and choose to be the servants of all.
In the name of Jesus Christ, the fulfilment of your love.
God our redeemer, your Holy Spirit sets us free to worship you without fear.
As we exercise our right to vote and rejoice in our freedom,
we lift up to you our brothers and sisters in Christ around the world,
who cannot choose their leaders,
who are not free to speak,
and who are persecuted for their faith.
Comfort and protect them, Lord God. Give them your peace,
and give us leaders who will defend their rights as well as ours.
In the name of Jesus Christ, the source of our freedom.
Lord and Judge of all the earth, by your Holy Spirit the prophets cried out for justice.
We pray for all who are voiceless at this election,
who cannot vote,
or who feel like no-one speaks for them.
We pray for leaders who will fast as you have commanded us to fast:
by loosing the chains of injustice,
by setting the oppressed free,
and by providing for those in need.
In the name of Jesus Christ, the bringer of perfect justice.
God of truth, you sent your Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth.
We pray for the debates in this final week to be marked by truth,
and we pray against all lies, slander and misrepresentation.
We ask for your discernment and insight for journalists who hold our leaders to account,
and for all members of the next Parliament, that they would do the same.
In the name of Jesus Christ, the way, the truth and the life.
Father God, as we look ahead to the next parliament and government,
renew and reshape us by your Holy Spirit.
We pray for your wisdom as we debate what kind of society we should be,
and for your peace as we find out the election result.
In the name of your son, our saviour Jesus Christ,
